Arielle diving in a flooded cave in the Yucatan Peninsula.
My favorite days are when I'm a few thousand feet inside a flooded cave in Belize, laying line through passages nobody has ever mapped. The water runs blood red and so dark with tannic runoff from the mangrove jungle above that you can't see your own hand.
I'm usually the one entering first, which my dive partner calls bravery and I call being a little less afraid of the crocodiles than he is.
Before either of us descends, we each test our own gear top to bottom, then show the other that everything works. Nobody takes anybody's word for it. We trust each other completely, and we verify anyway, because in a cave "I assumed it was fine" is the sentence that comes right before the story ends badly. Trust and verify are two sides of the same coin.
I've spent my career in single-cell science. At Memorial Sloan Kettering I transitioned from straight research into computational data analysis, then carried a bag selling flow cytometry to scientists at BD and Thermo Fisher, and eventually built a software company of my own, terraFlow.
terraFlow was a Succession client, which is how I met the team I've now joined. Succession builds outbound for life science companies end to end, from finding the right scientists to writing messages that come from people who genuinely understand the science. I came in as a very tough customer. I had strong opinions about my buyers and what worked, because I had lived it, and I figured I knew my own customers better than any agency could.
I brought years of hard-won knowledge about my buyers. They absorbed it fast, then gave it back to me clearer and more precise than I had ever managed on my own.
The craft underneath it impressed me just as much. They grounded every scientific claim before it went out, so the science was always right. They treated deliverability as its own discipline, because the best email in the world does nothing if it never arrives. And they measured what actually mattered, real replies and booked meetings, rather than open rates.
That's why I'm now the newest member of the Succession team. It turns out I want the same thing from the people I work with that I want from a dive partner: I trust them, they trust me, and we all check the gear before we drop.
If you're a founder or commercial lead staring at a pipeline that needs to be bigger, I've been where you're sitting. If you'd like to talk it through, I'd be glad to hear from you.
